MK Surveys are a Milton Keynes based topographic survey company working across the UK. I designed and modern website to introduce customers to the range of services they offer.

Introduction

MK Surveys, a topographic survey company based in Milton Keynes, provides surveying services across the UK. Their existing website was outdated, difficult to navigate, and filled with obsolete content. They needed a modern, professional website that would better reflect the scale of their work, improve content management, and enhance user experience.

A key challenge was that many customers lacked awareness of the full range of services MK Surveys offered. The new website needed to clearly communicate their expertise while allowing for future scalability.

Discovery & Research

Through initial discussions with company directors, we conducted a content audit and created a sitemap to structure the new site. While some existing content was outdated, it provided a useful foundation for refinement.

To enhance usability, we needed to rethink how services were categorised. A competitor analysis revealed multiple approaches to structuring service offerings. Ultimately, we decided to retain the existing “Land, Building, Utilities” categorisation, as it provided a clear, non-technical way for users to navigate MK Surveys’ services.

Wireframing & Content Strategy

Using Figma, we developed detailed wireframes that aligned with the revised sitemap. This process helped identify reusable content blocks, streamlining both design consistency and future content updates.

We optimised service descriptions by refining existing text and leveraging AI-assisted editing tools to improve clarity and consistency. This ensured that technical information was presented in an accessible way for potential clients.

Design

Although branding updates were not part of the project scope, we modernized the website’s look and feel while maintaining consistency with MK Surveys’ existing colours and logo.

Starting with the homepage, I designed multiple layout variations and worked closely with the directors to refine the visual direction. Once the core design was approved, I expanded it to include primary pages and ensured responsive adaptability across devices.

Development & Implementation

The new website was built as a custom WordPress block theme using Tailwind CSS for a lightweight, performance-driven design. Key development considerations included:

  • Scalability: Core WordPress blocks were utilised to provide long-term flexibility.
  • Ease of content management: Synced content patterns allowed for seamless updates across the site.
  • User-friendly editing: I provided WordPress training to the MK Surveys team, enabling them to confidently manage and expand their content.

The Outcome

The redesigned website has significantly improved MK Surveys’ online presence, better representing their professionalism and expertise. The updated structure and refined content strategy have made it easier for clients to navigate their services.

Since launch, user engagement has increased, and the website now serves as an effective tool for educating customers about the full scope of MK Surveys’ work.
